Students in 5th – 7th grade are given the opportunity to run for Student Council office. Positions are broken into the Executive Committee for the incoming 8th graders, including Student Council President and Vice-President and Commissioners for incoming 6th and 7th graders. The Student Council hosts various events through the year and works collaboratively to raise funds or implement new student-led projects. It is a great opportunity for students to work as a team, make an impact on the school and grow as a leader.
St. Timothy School’s Academic Decathlon team is made up of 6th – 8th grade students, working together as a team in the areas of logic and the Super Quiz and focusing individually on a specialized subject. The Academic Decathlon is held once a year and attracts over 100 Catholic schools. In past years, St. Timothy School has achieved impressive rankings in all categories in the competition, particularly the Super Quiz. The Academic Decathlon provides an opportunity for students to compete in an academic environment. They learn study skills, dedication, teamwork and sportsmanship.
7th graders buddy up with Pre-K students and 8th graders buddy up with Kindergartners. The buddies attend field trips together, sit together at school masses, participate in special activities together such as in-class Halloween, Christmas and Easter parties, and are team members at Pep Rallies. Started by the St. Timothy School alumni committee, the buddy system enhances the students' sense of community and family, teaches responsibility, empathy, big brother/big sister skills, how to be a role model and leadership. The buddy system also encourages students to stay in contact with their buddies as each of them progress through their educational careers.
The St. Timothy School newspaper was created in 2014 and is published every quarter by a team of middle school students who serve as Editor, layout and design, Staff Writer, photographer etc. for each issue. Students work collaboratively to decide on the articles for each edition and each year the newspaper has grown in content and ideas.
Members of the school newspaper team also go on field trips to various real life newsrooms that have included NBC news, KCRW, the LA Times and the UCLA Daily Bruin.
